Students had to design a piece to accompany an opinion piece, which would then be placed in a magazine spread. This piece was designed to accompany The Rolling Stone’s opinion piece on Harry Style’s appearance on the cover of Vouge, “Why Conservatives are so Threatened by Harry Styles in a Dress.” The illustration draws from how Harry Styles is following in the footsteps of past icons by defying gender roles. It puts him in the classic blown up dress pose made famous by Marilyn Monroe, playfully bending pop culture references. The use of halftone dots, the bold colors, and the pattern in the background makes tribute to the 80’s and 90’s, where genderbending stars like David Bowie, Elton John, and Prince were at their peak.
