The Picture of Dorian Gray is a classic gothic novel published in 1890 by Oscar Wilde. The book tells the tale of Dorian Gray, a self centered and hedonistic man who wishes for eternal youth. His wish is granted, but at a price that eventually becomes too much to bare.

The novel was subject to censorship from the moment of its release, with portions being cut from the original publishing without Wilde’s knowledge or consent. The audits largely consisted of the removal of scenes that implicated Dorian Gray’s bisexuality. It was not until 2011 that the complete version of the tale was published. The full, uncensored edition is now available online for free, made accessible by multiple literature preservation organizations.

This redesign of the book cover brings modern touches to the classic tale, with minimalist type treatment, a comic style of illustration, and a more modern form factor. However, it also maintains the elegance associated with vintage novels, using a regal serif and delicate patterning and details in the imagery. The rich, dark color pallet evokes the morally twisted and explicit elements of the tale.
